The First Step: The Application Journey from a Student’s Perspective
What made you choose Northeastern University over other universities?
I chose Northeastern University because I believe it is a crucial stepping stone to achieving my future career goals. The co-op program will help me apply the knowledge I have learned to real-world work, allowing me to discover my strengths and gain a clearer direction. Additionally, Northeastern's dynamic and innovative learning environment will provide me with ample opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities and develop comprehensively.

Northeastern University: Hoang Long's aspirations for excellence in education and learning
What difficulties did you encounter during the application process?
I found the process of completing my application for Northeastern University to be quite smooth, especially the personal essay section. The lack of restrictive requirements allowed me the freedom to express my story and personal experiences related to my chosen field of study. However, discovering a unique and compelling perspective was still a process that required deep thought and reflection.
What do you think was the key factor that helped you get accepted to the prestigious Northeastern University?
I am fully aware that I am not a perfect candidate. However, through my essay, I have made an earnest effort to convey who I am and the values I can bring to this university. I believe that my passion and determination will enable me to make a positive contribution to the student community.

Can you share your experience in planning your essay?
Everyone has experienced failure, and I am no exception. When writing my essay, I reflect on the challenges I've faced in life, share how I've overcome them, and illustrate how these experiences have helped me become a better version of myself.
What impressed you the most during your time with Capstone?
Capstone provides incredibly enthusiastic support to students. The advisers at Capstone helped me understand the requirements of different universities and how to craft an impressive essay. Initially, my essay was quite generic and didn't clearly showcase my strengths. Thanks to the valuable suggestions from the advisers, especially Dr. Mark (Capstone managing director and co-founder), I found the right direction and refined my essay. I learned how to highlight my real-life experiences and connect them to my academic goals.
Do you have any advice for students preparing to study abroad?
Keep striving and work hard to achieve your goals, even if they seem impossible to others. You won't know what's truly possible until you try.
What worries and expectations do you have about adjusting to a new environment in the U.S.?
I am quite anxious about adapting to a new learning environment but also eager to develop my independence and problem-solving skills. Additionally, I look forward to the challenges of a high-quality academic program and accessing advanced knowledge. I hope that the co-op program will help me gain practical experience and expand my professional network for future opportunities.
What are your plans for activities and employment after graduation?
After graduation, if the opportunity arises, I would like to seek a job related to my field of study to apply the knowledge I’ve gained and develop my career in this industry. If that’s not possible, I plan to return to Vietnam and actively seek new experiences with domestic companies.
